New Injected Medication for Childhood Psoriasis Appears Promising

Psoriasis is a common skin disease that can affect both children and adults. Psoriasis causes itchy red scaly skin and its appearance may bother some people. Fortunately, the medication Etanercept has shown positive results in pediatric studies.

Traditionally, psoriasis is treated with topical steroids, ultraviolet light therapy, or even chemotherapy, all of which have side effects. Etanercept is FDA approved for adults and most recently was tested in children. Researchers conducting the pediatric study at the Feinberg School found the injected form of Etanercept to be safe and effective for children. The researchers hope that the medication will be approved soon by the FDA for pediatric use.
